1932年，Mary Frye與丈夫居住在巴爾的摩市，在此之前未曾寫詩，啟發她創作（Do not stand at my grave and weep）靈感的是一位德國少女Margaret Schwarzkopf。 

Margaret Schwarzkopf的母親當時在德國，但那時德國境內反猶太風氣高漲，儘管Margaret擔心患病的母親，卻無法返國相會。當母親病故，Margaret向Mary Frye傾訴沒機會在母親墳前哭泣的哀慟，於是Mary Frye在咖啡色的購物袋上寫下了這首詩。

很喜歡這首詩，不完全按字面翻譯，用我自己喜歡的字詞寫成中文，希望日後在我的告別式中，家人能為我朗誦；也希望它能撫慰生者失去家人哀慟的心。

不在其實是以另一種形式存在---當我逝去，其實是化為日月星辰風雨冰雪與你相伴。所以，別哭泣！我並沒有離開，我就守護在你身邊。
