※ above the salt反映了中世紀英國社會的一種風俗習慣。在宴會餐桌上，鹽瓶擺放的位置有一定的規矩，坐在鹽瓶上首（to sit above the salt）的客人離主人最近，因此受到主人格外的尊敬；做在下首（to sit below the salt）的則是一般賓客或主人的眷屬。這種習俗雖已不復存在，但「尊為上賓」（above the salt）與「坐於下首」（below the salt）兩個成語仍沿用至今。
